Germany/ Austria - Probewohnen

Target group: Care leavers in Germany - Albert-Schweitzer-Kinderdorf / Waldenburg

Main goal of the project: Independent living skills

Short summary: Independent Living Skills Training Program.

When a young person reaches the age of 17 years old in in Albert-Schweitzer-Kinderdorf, they are given the opportunity to live alone in an independent apartment as a trial to develop their independent living skills. That means that the care leaver moves for at least two weeks minimum to an own flat. This is organised by a social worker. It has been agreed with the care leaver for how long it will be and in which form it should take place.

During this time the care leaver will learn to shop for food, to budget, pay bills, carry out everyday duties, attend appointments and everyday life skills. After this period the care leaver and the social worker will reflect on their experience What worked well?, What do I need help with? What more do I need to learn? How did I cope with the loneliness? All of these areas are discussed. There is an option to repeat this process until a person is ready to live independently.
